Each question given below consists of a statement, followed by two arguments numbered I and II. You have to decide which of the arguments is a 'strong' argument and which is a 'weak' argument.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only argument I is strong
  • (B) If only argument II is strong
  • (C) If either I or II is strong
  • (D) If neither I nor II is strong and
  • (E) If both I and II are strong.

Statement: Should Government close down loss-making public sector enterprises?

Arguments:

  1. No. All employees will lose their jobs, security and earning, what would they do?
  2. Yes. In a competitive world the rule is 'survival of the fittest'.

Neither I nor II is strong
Both I and II are strong
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Closing down public-sector enterprises will definitely throw the engaged persons out of employment. So, argument I holds. Also, closing down is no solution for a loss-making enterprise. Rather, its causes of failure should be studied, analyzed and the essential reforms implemented. Even if this does not work out, the enterprise may be privatized. So, argument II is vague,

In the 1st argument, the company is already in loss and if it continues to operate It will incur more loss and eventually there will come a time when either they'll cut down on the workers or shut down, resulting in loss of jobs, so it is not a strong argument. 2nd argument is a universal truth, so it is correct.

Based on the steps to check forcefulness of arguments, "If the given argument is in the form of a question thrown back by the arguer, then it is declared weak. " So, as argument 1 is a question, it should be weak. But why is it strong here?

Option 2- Is a strong argument as it is universal truth.

Option -1 is a weak argument as if govt keep supporting loss making public sectors it will not help our country development.

In real life, the action in the statement is actually happening ie it is practicable. So how could a first argument be correct? Please, someone explain me.

2nd is universal truth it must be strong argument.

1st is country will be in loss how could it be strong? We should not think emotionally.

According to me, 2nd will be strong as it's like universal truth and the first one is not practical so it should be weak.
