Logical Reasoning - Number Series - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Number Series - Type 2 (Q.No. 8)
Directions to Solve
Look carefully for the pattern, and then choose which pair of numbers comes next.

8.
6 20 8 14 10 8 12
14 10
2 18
4 12
2 14
14 14
Answer: Option
Explanation:
This is an alternating addition and subtraction series. In the first pattern, 2 is added to each number to arrive at the next; in the alternate pattern, 6 is subtracted from each number to arrive at the next.

Each element in the even position is the resultant of a multiple of 2 starting from 3 i.e 2*3=6, 2*4=8, 2*5=10, 2*6=12, so at position 8, 2*7=14.

Each element in the odd position is also the result of multiples of 2 starting from 10 with a decrement of 3 each time i.e. 2*10=20, 2*7=14, 2*4=8 so now at position 7, we need to decrement 4 by 3 i.e 4-3=1 and multiply with 2 i.e. 2*1=2.

So our answer is 2,14

It's really confusing series, but we take even series in increasing and decreasing order separately.

Even series taken in increasing order 6 8 10 12.
Even series taken in decreasing order 20 14 8.
We see that increasing series increases by 2 and decreasing series decreases by 6. So the last two digit will be 14 in increasing series and 2 will be in decreasing series.

6, 20, 8, 14, 10, 8, 12, .....What number should come next?
a1 b1 a2 b2 a3 b3 a4 b4(?) a5(?)
6 20 8 14 10 8 12
a1-a2= 6-8 =-2 Again, b1-b2=20-14=6
a2-a3= 8-10=-2 b2-b3=14-8 =6
a3-a4=10-12=-2 So, b3-b4=6=8-2*
So, a4-a5=-2=12-14*
Ans: Next numbers are b4=2 and a5=14.

First pattern numbers is 6,8,10,12
alternate pattern numbers is 20,14,8

FP is adding 2 with each num: 6+2=8, 8+2=10, 10+2=12, 12+2=14 so 14 is answer.
AP is sub 6 with each num: 20-6=14, 14-6=8, 8-6=2 so 2 is answer.

so the answer is 6 20 8 14 10 8 12 2 14

The solution is;

1. 6 (+2 on 3rd position so 6+2=8)
2. 20 (-6 on 4th position so 20-6=14)
3. 8 (+2 on 5th postion so 8+2=10)
4. 14 (-6 on 6th position so 14-6=8)
5. 10 (...goes on...)
6. 8 (...goes on...)
7. 2
8. 14.

Make two series by taking alternative number.

6, 8, 10, 12, [14] Explanation=(6+2=8, 8+2=10, 10+2=12, 12+2=14).
20, 14, 8, [2] Explanation=(20-6=14, 14-6=8, 8-6=2).

So correct answer is 2,14 i.e. option D.

Take the no's in even positions is the increasation of 2, and in odd positions no's is in decresing order of 6.

6, 8, 10, 12, 14.... is in even positions.

20, 14, 8, 2.... is in odd positions.

Its very simple.

Adding two with odd positioned numbers. (6+2=8, 8+2=10, 10+2=12, 12+2=14).

Subtracting six by even positioned numbers. (20-6=14, 14-6=8, 8-6=2).

So the answer is 2 14.

Alternating addition and subtraction series.

In the first pattern, 2 is added to each number.

In the second pattern, 6 is subtracted from each number. To arrive at the next.

Yes its really easy but in exam the pattern if we can't identify it may be bit difficult.

Just practice as I was confused in solving the type 2.
