Logical Reasoning - Number Series - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Number Series - Type 2 (Q.No. 8)
Directions to Solve
Look carefully for the pattern, and then choose which pair of numbers comes next.
8.
6 20 8 14 10 8 12
Answer: Option
Explanation:
This is an alternating addition and subtraction series. In the first pattern, 2 is added to each number to arrive at the next; in the alternate pattern, 6 is subtracted from each number to arrive at the next.

Odd positions:
6, 8, 10, 12 , y→ clearly +2 pattern --> y = 12+2 = 14.
Even positions:
20, 14, 8, x → -6 decreasing pattern --> x = 8-6 = 2.
6, 8, 10, 12 , y→ clearly +2 pattern --> y = 12+2 = 14.
Even positions:
20, 14, 8, x → -6 decreasing pattern --> x = 8-6 = 2.

Yes its really easy but in exam the pattern if we can't identify it may be bit difficult.
Just practice as I was confused in solving the type 2.

6 + 2 = 8.
8 + 2 = 10.
10 + 2 = 12.
12 + 2 = 14.
Another pair
20 - 6 = 14.
14 - 6 = 8.
8 - 6 = 2.
8 + 2 = 10.
10 + 2 = 12.
12 + 2 = 14.
Another pair
20 - 6 = 14.
14 - 6 = 8.
8 - 6 = 2.

Hey nothing to worry. Its very simple.
Adding two with odd positioned numbers.
Subtracting six by even positioned numbers.
Adding two with odd positioned numbers.

6 20 8 14 10 8 12 2 14.
1) 20-6 = 14.
14-6 = 8.
8-6 = 2.
2) 6+2 = 8.
8+2 = 10.
10+2 = 12.
12+2 = 14.
1) 20-6 = 14.
14-6 = 8.
8-6 = 2.
2) 6+2 = 8.
8+2 = 10.

6+2 = 8.
8+2 = 10,
10+2 = 12,
12+2 = 14.
20-6 = 14,
14-6 = 8,
8-6 = 2.
So, the Answer is 2 14.
6+2 = 8.
8+2 = 10,
10+2 = 12,
12+2 = 14.
20-6 = 14,
14-6 = 8,
8-6 = 2.
So, the Answer is 2 14.

First select the alternate numbers.
6, 8, 10, 12, =14 (add plus 1).
20, 14, 8, =2 (sub 6 from each number).
6, 8, 10, 12, =14 (add plus 1).
20, 14, 8, =2 (sub 6 from each number).

The logic is;
6, 8, 10, 12, 14. Is in even positions. Add +2.
20, 14, 8, 2. Is in odd positions. So, Sub-6.
6, 8, 10, 12, 14. Is in even positions. Add +2.
20, 14, 8, 2. Is in odd positions. So, Sub-6.

6+2 = 8.
8+2 = 10.
10+2 = 12.
12+2 = 14 [14].
And 20-6 = 14.
14-6 = 8.
8-6 = 2 [2] ans:- 2 14.
8+2 = 10.
10+2 = 12.
12+2 = 14 [14].
And 20-6 = 14.
14-6 = 8.
8-6 = 2 [2] ans:- 2 14.

6 + 2 = 8.
8 + 2 = 10.
10 + 2 = 12.
12 + 2 = 14.
Another pair,
20 - 6 = 14.
14 - 6 = 8.
8 - 6 = 2.
8 + 2 = 10.
10 + 2 = 12.
12 + 2 = 14.
Another pair,
20 - 6 = 14.
14 - 6 = 8.
8 - 6 = 2.
