Yes, Jenkins was right behind, however it can't be concluded that he tackled the carrier. After Burton tripped, the carrier could have scored a goal before Jenkins even got a chance to tackle. Focus on what happened, and not what could happen.

Out of the four:

1. Calvin tried & missed. Fell down.

2. Burton - Could have tried to tackle, got the ball, however tripped, carrier got the ball back.

2. Jenkins - Was the next in line to tackle. He did tackle, or did not, who knows?

3. Zeller - Jenkins could have missed and fallen as well (nobody knows) and Zeller tackled (or not, because carrier scored).

The explanation itself is wrong. @Stanley your method is too complex for me so I'll make a drawing for everyone that helped me.

Receiver.
Calvin.
Jenkins Burton.
Zeller.

Calvin falls, Burton trips. As Zeller is behind Calvin and Burton he MAY have a problem getting around them which leaves us Jenkins who can easily run from the left side to tackle the Receiver/Carrier.

Look the picture friends if calvin and burton falls its very obvious that jenkins will defend.because ball carrier will face jenkins before zeller

jenkins
zeller calvin<<<ball carrier
burton (falls)
(falls)

I think the problem is well worded. The way I did it.

WR = 1.
Calvin =-1.
jenkins = burton =-1.
zeller = -2.

After when they try to tackle,

Calvin trips = -3.
Burton trips = -2.
zeller who started behind everyone = -2.
jenkins is the closest = -1.

This worked for me.

I think Calvin fails.

Jenkin and Burton are side by side, Burton trips mean he is around the player with the ball.

Zeller is too far, but a person who I am near to the ball right now other than Burton is Jenkin, so Jenkin is the answer.

It doesn't say that Jenkins tackled anybody. Calvin tried to tackle but missed. Here, The question was which defensive player tackles the receiver, not which defensive player succeed in tackling the receiver.

The scene is like this:

C fils and thus is lying on the ground.

B trips down.

C forms a barrier for Z and also Z is too far.

Thus J is the only one left.

I agree what sunny says and that is what will exactly happen. Since Burton has tripped Jenkins will be far away till then Zeller will only defend the ball.

But here is said Jenkins and Burton side by side they are not said that burton is behind calvin & jenkins is at last.
