Logical Reasoning - Logical Problems - Discussion

Each problem consists of three statements. Based on the first two statements, the third statement may be true, false, or uncertain.

2.

The Shop and Save Grocery is south of Greenwood Pharmacy.
Rebecca's house is northeast of Greenwood Pharmacy.
Rebecca's house is west of the Shop and Save Grocery.
If the first two statements are true, the third statement is

[A]. true
[B]. false
[C]. uncertain

Answer: Option B

Explanation:

Because the first two statements are true, Rebecca's house is also northeast of the Shop and Save Grocery, which means that the third statement is false.

It is false because if the first 2 statements are true then Rebecca's house is in the northwest of the shop and save grocery.

I'm not getting, because how Rebecca's house at west side same as its also east side. Then why answer is west?

I believe it is uncertain. There is no implicit statement of where stop and save is in relation to the pharmacy other than "south".

What if the stop and save were 50km SouthEast? It would STILL BE SOUTH of the pharmacy. Then Rebecca's house was only 10 km NorthEast. It would make the statement true.

Yes, @John.

I also agree it will be uncertain.

We only know that the stop and shop are south of the pharmacy.

However, because the second statements state Rebecca's house is North East of the pharmacy we can deduce that if the stop and shop were either South East or South West to be consistent that would be mentioned.

Therefore we have to assume the stop and shop is neither west or east of the Pharmacy.

If Rebecca is northeast of the pharmacy then she is also east of the stop and shop.

Therefore she can't be west of it.
