Discussion Forum : Logical Problems - Type 1 (Q.No. 8)
Directions to Solve
Each problem consists of three statements. Based on the first two statements, the third statement may be true, false, or uncertain.

8.
During the past year, Josh saw more movies than Stephen.
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren.
Darren saw more movies than Josh.
If the first two statements are true, the third statement is
true
false
uncertain
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Because the first two sentences are true, both Josh and Darren saw more movies than Stephen. However, it is uncertain as to whether Darren saw more movies than Josh.

If Josh saw more movies than Stephen and Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren, then Darren must have seen more movies than Josh. This is because the transitive property of inequality states that if A > B and B > C, then A > C.

Therefore, the third statement is **true**.

Here is a diagram to illustrate this:

Movies seen:

Darren > Stephen > Josh.

If the first two statements are true, then the third statement must also be true.

The Answer should be "False".

Because

During the past year,

Josh saw more movies than Stephen ---> (It means Josh saw movies more than Stephen)
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren ----> (It means Stephen saw movies more than Darren)
Darren saw more movies than Jos -----> (It means, the statement is wrong. So, the answer should be false).

@All.

According to me, the solution is

J>S<D>J

So therefore, we cannot say whether Darren saw movies more than Josh because they don't tell how much movies Darren saw.

Josh saw more movies than Stephen : J > S
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren : S < D

Therefore : J > S < D

Example values for J > S < D :

1. 50 > 10 < 40
2. 40 > 10 < 50

Given, Darren saw more movies than Josh = D > J.

According to example 1 (50 > 10 < 40) 'D > J' is false.
According to example 2 (40 > 10 < 50) 'D > J' is true.

Therefore, we cannot say it true or false. That is why the result is 'uncertain'.

Hope this help you. Have a nice day!

It is true because,

Josh saw more movies than Stephen [x>t].
Stephen saw few movies than Darren[t<d].
Darren saw more movies than Josh[d>x].

I can clearly understand the explanations above and agree with you that is uncertain. It is also worth noting that while the first phrase contains a period of time ("during the past year") the other two phrases do not mention the period. I believe that because of this "small detail" the answer for this particular question couldn't have been anything else but Uncertain.

Answer should be "False".

Because,
During the past year,

Josh saw more movies than Stephen --(It means Josh saw movies more than Stephen)
Stephen saw fewer movies than Darren --(It means Stephen saw movies more than Darren)
Darren saw more movies than Jos -----(It means, statement is wrong. So, the answer should be false).

This is how it works:
D is Darren, J is Josh and S is Stephan

the order from person that watched most movies to person that watched least could be either of the following:

Scenario 1:
D
J
S

Scenario 2:
J
D
S

In both cases, stephan saw the least movies, but we dont know which of the two scenarios is right in saying whether Darren saw more than josh or the other way around and hence the answer is uncertain.

Hope that helps :)

Let josh saw movies =5,
Stephen saw movies= 3
And darren saw movies=4
5>3<4 this is false.

(or)

Let josh saw movies =4,
Stephen saw movies= 3
And darren saw movies=5
4>3<5 this is true.

So that both a&b answer are correct.

How can we agree. If we see the next question then it should be true here also as it is clearly given the order josh > darren > stephen.

Then how come the answer is uncertain?
