Directions to Solve

In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

27.

Statements: All educated people read newspapers. Rahul does not read newspaper.

Conclusions:

  1. Rahul is not educated.
  2. Reading newspaper is not essential to be educated.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Since both the premises are universal and one premise is negative, the conclusion must be universal negative and should not contain the middle term. So, only I follows.

@All.

Here, The first premise states and implies that *all* educated people, without exception, read newspapers. The second premise states that Rahul does not read a newspaper - this places him outside the category of those who read newspapers, and naturally outside the category of those who are educated. In this sense, the conclusion that Rahul is not educated follows from the premises.

And Rahul is not a universal quantifier but a particular hence, the conclusion must be a particular negative instead of a universal negative.

'Newspaper' is not distributed in any of the premises. So, no definite conclusion can be made.

It is not mentioned that only educated people can read newspaper.

Uneducated people can also read newspaper. Hence it should be option C.
