Logical Reasoning - Logical Deduction - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Logical Deduction - Section 1 (Q.No. 21)
Directions to Solve
In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.
Give answer:
- (A) If only conclusion I follows
- (B) If only conclusion II follows
- (C) If either I or II follows
- (D) If neither I nor II follows and
- (E) If both I and II follow.

Statements: All poles are guns. Some boats are not poles.
Conclusions:
- All guns are boats.
- Some boats are not guns.
Answer: Option
Explanation:

As it clearly says. All poles are guns. Means poles = guns.
Some boats are not poles. Means -.
Some boats are not guns. So option D is wrong.
Some boats are not poles. Means -.

I agree with supporters of Option B. The implication from statement II is that some boats are poles. Therefore some boats are guns.

Syllogism, rule no 2:
No term can be distributed in the conclusion unless it is distributed in the premises.

It's a rule when all and some not comes with same subject and predicate then it becomes either or case.

It's not necessary that if some boat's are not poles than it will not be gun. Conclusion can't be got.

Here, poles=guns (for all).
Now, some boats are not poles hence some boats should not be guns too.
Now, some boats are not poles hence some boats should not be guns too.
