Logical Reasoning - Logical Deduction - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Logical Deduction - Section 1 (Q.No. 1)
Directions to Solve

In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

1.

Statements: No women teacher can play. Some women teachers are athletes.

Conclusions:

  1. Male athletes can play.
  2. Some athletes can play.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Since one premise is negative, the conclusion must be negative. So, neither conclusion follows.

How it is possible? There will be a chance for athlete to play.

Here we look only for woman. So better don't think beyond that.

Nothing is given about the male athletes so we can't tell 1 is correct.

We don't no weather all athletes are women Or some are men so we can't say 2 is correct.

Here we need to follow the Rules:

No women teacher can play: Means: Answer should be in negative.

Male athletes can play: Means: This will not follow because here we are not talking about Male.

Some athletes can play: Means: This will also not follow because I already told you answer should be in negative.

Male athletes can play - The first statement states 'No women teacher can play'; we have no idea who can play, so we cannot assume statement 1 to be true.

Some athletes can play - The first or the second statement do not tell us who can play. The second statement states that 'Some women teachers are athletes' which is adding a fact to the first statement given, but still does not tell us who can play.
