Logical Reasoning - Logical Deduction - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Logical Deduction - Section 1 (Q.No. 12)
Directions to Solve

In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

12.

Statements: Some dedicated souls are angels. All social workers are angels.

Conclusions:

  1. Some dedicated souls are social workers.
  2. Some social workers are dedicated souls.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The first premise is an I type proposition. So, the middle term 'angels' forming the predicate is not distributed. The second premise is an A type proposition. So, the middle term 'angels' forming the predicate is not distributed. Since the middle term is not distributed even once in the premises, no definite conclusion follows.

Even I feel that answer should be E.
Firstly since the middle term is not distributed in both the premise so "no definite conclusion can be drawn".

But then again if we draw a Big Outer rectangle as "Angels", then from premise 2 we can also draw a Small Inner circle inside it as "Social Workers". And from premise 2 we can draw another small circle half inside the rectangle and half outside the rectangle as the "Dedicated Souls".

Now from the above venn-diagram there is a possibility that the tho small might intersect with each other at some point. In that case we can say:

1. Some dedicated souls are social workers.
2. Some social workers are dedicated souls.

I hope my understanding on the question and is correct and my explanation of the solution is also correct.
Please feel free to reply and correct me if I am wrong.

Option E is incorrect because if I say - "Some men are angels. All women are angels" that does not mean some men are women.

See the middle term is not distributed in the second premise so both the conclusions won't follow.

I am not able to understand the explanation kindly explain it simply by venn diagram.

The explanation is true but how can I know if the middle term is distributed or not?

If any one is true then both are true, and if one is wrong then both are wrong.

E is the correct option, both conclusions are converses of each other.

I thnk E is the right answer with the help of the venn diagram.

I agree @Abhi. With the aid of a Venn diagram, it easy to see.
