Logical Reasoning - Logical Deduction - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Logical Deduction - Section 1 (Q.No. 50)
Directions to Solve

In each question below are given two statements followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given two statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance from commonly known facts. Read the conclusion and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the two given statements, disregarding commonly known facts.

Give answer:

  • (A) If only conclusion I follows
  • (B) If only conclusion II follows
  • (C) If either I or II follows
  • (D) If neither I nor II follows and
  • (E) If both I and II follow.

Statements: All artists are smokers. Some smokers are drunkards.

Conclusions:

  1. All smokers are artists.
  2. Some drunkards are not smokers.
Only conclusion I follows
Only conclusion II follows
Either I or II follows
Neither I nor II follows
Both I and II follow
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Since the middle term 'smokers' is not distributed even once in the premises, no definite conclusion follows.

But negative sentence present in the conclusion. So it follow either conclusion.

Some smokers are drunkards, means some smokers are not drunkards. i.e. Some drunkards are not smokers. Isn't it?

@Maahi,

1. Some smokers are drunkards.
2. Means some smokers are not drunkards.
Reverse 2nd Some non-drunkards are the smoker.

Which is not in option and thus either options do not satisfy the statement.

Why not option B?

Venn Diagram suggests that B should be the right choice because some drunkards are non-smokers.

Some smokers are drunkards.

Conclusion:
1.) Some drunkards are smokers
2.) All drunkards are smokers.

As there are two conclusions possible thus answer two is not correct.

All drunkards can be smokers too. Thus two different Venn diagrams are possible.
