Discussion Forum : Course of Action - Section 3 (Q.No. 46)
Directions to Solve

In each question below is given a statement followed by three courses of action numbered I, II and III. You have to assume everything in the statement to be true, then decide which of the three given suggested courses of action logically follows for pursuing.

46.

Statement: The Company X has rejected first lot of values supplied by Company A and has cancelled its entire huge order quoting use of inferior quality material and poor craftsmanship.

Courses of Action:

  1. The Company A needs to investigate functioning of its purchase, production and quality control departments.
  2. The Company A should inspect all the valves rejected by Company X.
  3. The Company A should inform Company X that steps have been taken for improvement and renegotiate schedule of supply.

Only I and II follow
Only II follows
II, and either I or III follow
All I, II and III follow
None of these
Answer: Option
Explanation:
First of all, company A should inspect the rejected valves to ensure if they are really sub-standard. If yes, it should scrutinise its working thoroughly and remove its lackenings, be it in the quality of raw material or craftsmanship. So, both I and II follow. III seems to be a far-off action which can be implemented only after the first two steps are put into practice. Thus, III does not follow,

I do not understand why D is deemed incorrect as well. In the Direction it is not requested which action have to be taken to discover the root cause of the bad quality of the lot, but what is the course of actions. As the goal of the company is to win clients to make profits, explaining that the Company has taken steps for improvements is definitively an action that follow. So either the Direction is not well stated ". Decide which of the three given suggested courses of action logically follows for pursuing" and should be substituted with ". Decide which of the three given suggested courses of action logically follows for fixing the issue".

Or we should accept that the direction could be interpreted widely and definitely take in account the overall corporate goal and accept that action III is due.

The goal of any company is to sell it's products or services and be profitable so not including option III just doesn't make sense. If the company doesn't want to renegotiate with the same client after rectifying it's mistake for a future contract, why bother to even run a company at all. So sorry but the evaluation of this question is incorrect.

I don't understand why D is deemed incorrect, because even if its a long term solution in a way, it still forms part of the solution, the question does not say anything about the target time, it just needs steps that need to be taken by Company A to ensure they fix the problem, and the Option III is part of the solution.

Statement III should also the part of course of action because company A has been taken the action against inferior quality and want renegotiate it, that why Option D should have been correct.
