Hard work is one essential quality that is inevitable for any successful person in a particular field. But once a person gains expertise in his field, his hard work automatically transforms into smart work where he can save more money and resources. A fresher should always opt for hardwork as it is the foundation for better performance but with experience he must try to convert it to smart work to stay ahead in the competition.

Hard work is working tirelessly with your dedication and putting your best into your work by going through the conventional cycle of work completion. While I suppose smart work is getting same work done in an efficient manner with lesser effort.
Nonetheless, one cannot ignore the fact the one must work hard before working smart.

There is no smart work without hard work. Having said that I stick to the saying "If I have to cut a tree within 10 hours, I would sharpen my knife for the first 9 hours". So, knowing where to put effort and where not to work hard is smart work.

According to me, basically, there is no difference. Without doing any hard work you can't do a smart work. And when someone says you are a smart worker then obviously you are doing some hard work and it's the result of that hard work.
