Well, I would say smart work comes from hard work only. As there is one theory also ' Work hard until you get smart. So, in my point of view, you can do smart work only if you have work harder in your life. And knowing where to put effort and where not to work hard is smart work.

Hard work - working with lot of Effort. Here our Body plays active role.
Smart work - getting the maximum work done with little effort. Here Brain plays active role.

Hard work is putting in as many efforts as you can to get the desired results whereas smart work is doing the same things involving lesser efforts but yielding same results. Let me illustrate it with an example.
If you are asked to draw a chair. Some of you may use your physical strength to bring it up but a few of you will use the wheels available to drag it to the position without putting in the much efforts. Former is the hard work. And latter is the smart work.

Hard work is effort-oriented whereas smart work is result oriented. You'll learn a lot from hard work because you'll face failures.

Smart work tells that in which way and how much of hard work we have to do for success because labor do much more hard work than others. So without smart work, we find a success but takes much more time.

According to me, hard work is mostly without utilizing your skills and brain first, where smart work is you utilize your brain first before doing any efforts of work.
