According to me, hard work and smart work are both interlinked with each other. Rather, I can say both are dependent on each other. Smart work will only be done when we have done Hard work in the past. So Hard work is basically a devotion while smart work is an application.

The main difference is that in hard work we start putting in efforts without really thinking a course for our action while smart work is thinking about the course of our action and then working hard. So both involve hard work but smart work involves a much more direct approach where you concentrate your hard work directly to achieve your goal.
