According to me, basically, there is no difference. Without doing any hard work you can't do a smart work. And when someone says you are a smart worker then obviously you are doing some hard work and it's the result of that hard work.

When we do some work with more efforts and time then it's hard work.
But when we do same work with fewer efforts and time then it's a smart work.
(Here's no matter what type of work is there it may be physical work or mental work).

Hard working is a way of approaching and accomplishing a task while smart working is an optimized way of doing the same task. Experience is an aid to smart work.
Freshers are always hardworking while a professional is smart working.

In my opinion, hard work is when an employee invests all his time and energy to complete one particular work, and smart work is when an employee completes his work without much effort and energy by using their skills and techniques.

Hard work: It is something with which you work to complete an assignment with existent machinery/processes/systems in place.
Smart work: its quite same as hard work, but with added improvements/ innovations to the existing system.

I think both of things are important in a person because smart work is done by hard work, but it should be in the right direction. We can't do start smart without hard work. These are the two sides of a coin, so both are important.

I think both hard work and smart work are correct but the difference between them is Hard work shows that how healthy and fit enough your body is and Smart work shows that how you are brain is very active and differently thinking.

'I can do this'.
This is confidence because I am making a statement on myself since I know what my ability is.
'Only I can do this'.
This is over confidence because I am making a statement on others without knowing their ability.

Hard work is doing a work in a dedicated manner. It takes more time, it affects the mental health and it creates stress.
But smart work means doing something in a systematic way, which is the simple and shortest way to do a work.
