The question for asking previous/current employer details comes only if the person taking the interview is not fully convinced with the answers provided by the candidate.
Actually, this particular question should not come up at all. How the candidate performs in an interview is the only thing what is required. Going for previous references does not serve any purpose.

They will only ask you to see what your reaction will be. Judging by how you respond, they can easily tell whether you're telling the truth about your previous job or you're just making it all up.
