The choke is a coil, not a transformer, When a current flows, an electrical field is created around the coil. If the current through the coil is removed abruptly the field collapses generating a high voltage due to induction.

The starter causes the abrupt "break" in the current, causing the high voltage.

The high voltage is applied across the light tube, causing a "flash over" in the tube, igniting the gas, making it conductive, leading to ionization, causing luminescence in the inner coating of the tube.

The name comes from blocking""choking" high frequencies while passing low frequencies. It is a functional name; the same inductor is often called a "choke" if used for blocking or decoupling higher frequencies, but an "inductor" if used in electronic filters or tuned circuits. Inductors designed for use as chokes are usually distinguished by not having the low loss construction (high Q factor) required in inductors used in tuned circuits and filtering applications.

Choke in tube light is the coil that is used to induce the high voltage across the tube light. The choke worked as an inductor and as we all know the inductor is used to induce the high voltage for a shorter period of time. The purpose of choke in tube light is to induce high voltage.

Initially during start-up a large potential difference is required in a tube light i.e. across the anode -cathode. So to obtain that large potential difference choke is connected in the circuit. It provides the initial boost of voltage that causes luminescence in the tube.

I heard from someone that the starter is basically a capacitor and it works simillar to the capacitor of a fan. It gives the initial boost to start the tubelight. And the choke is an RL circuit. It filters the line voltage. It only lets 50Hz (or 60Hz) pass through it.

To cause luminesence in the tubelgt we require large pot. Diff. B/w anode nd cathode. So choke coil is used. In choke coil inductor is used. When ind. Is opened while charging it produces infinite voltage is obtained. So choke coil is used.

Voltage is increase by the chock because chock is a stepup transformer. This high voltage is use it ionizes the atoms inside the tube. By this process conduction takes place by two terminals inside tube.

Choke commenly for two purpose first purpose is induce the high voltage(1000v) between two terminals of the bulb and maintain a reduced voltage(110v) during running.

Choke provides a high ramp voltage to the tube light. This high ramp voltage ionise atoms of gas in the tube light. By which conduction takes place.

If voltage is increased then current automatically decreased. Function of choke is also to decrease the starting current.
