The gramophone was invented and patented by Emile Berliner in 1887. Emile Berliner was the first person to use flat disks to record on, instead of the cylinders of previous devices by Thomas Edison and Alexander Bell.

The phonograph was invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. While other inventors had produced devices that could record sounds, Edison's phonograph was the first to be able to reproduce the recorded sound. His phonograph originally recorded sound onto a tinfoil sheet phonograph cylinder, and could both record and reproduce sounds.

Alexander Graham Bell's Volta Laboratory made several improvements in the 1880s, including the use of wax-coated cardboard cylinders, and a cutting stylus that moved from side to side in a "zig zag" pattern across the record.

At the turn of the 20th century, Emile Berliner initiated the transition from phonograph cylinders to gramophone records: flat, double-sided discs with a spiral groove running from the periphery to near the center. Other improvements were made throughout the years, including modifications to the turntable and its drive system, the needle and stylus, and the sound and equalization systems.

Early attempts to design a consumer sound or music playing gadget began in 1877 when Thomas Edison invented his tin-foil phonograph. The word "phonograph" was Edison's trade name for his device, which played recorded sounds from round cylinders. The sound quality on the phonograph was bad and each recording lasted for one only play. Edison's phonograph was followed by Alexander Graham Bell's Graphophone. The graphophone used wax cylinders which could be played many times, however, each cylinder had to be recorded separately making the mass reproduction of the same music or sounds impossible with the graphophone.

On November 8 1887, Emile Berliner, a German immigrant working in Washington D.C. , patented a successful system of sound recording. Berliner was the first inventor to stop recording on cylinders and start recording on flat disks or records.

Jayachandra is right and it is emile berliner who invented the gramophone...edison invented phonograph which was used for recording and playing sounds using rotating cylindrical disks....and yeah edison was very curious for every statement.

He spoke the following sentence while testing his phonograph for 1st time:
'mary had a little lamb, its fleece was white as snow...and everywhere that mary went, the lamb was sure to go.':)

The Gramophone was invented by Emile Berliner. He improved on the design of the phonautograph by using discs instead of cylinders. Berliner patented his device on September 26, 1887.

The phonograph, in its later forms also called a gramophone or record player, is a device introduced in 1877 for the mechanical recording and reproduction of sound.

Although Thomas Edison attempted to make the gramophone, it was Emile Berliner who invented the gramophone. It was invented in November 1887.

Im still confused, some sites refer as Thomas Alva Edison and some as Emile Berliner.
