Jayachandra is right and it is emile berliner who invented the gramophone...edison invented phonograph which was used for recording and playing sounds using rotating cylindrical disks....and yeah edison was very curious for every statement.
He spoke the following sentence while testing his phonograph for 1st time:

Im still confused, some sites refer as Thomas Alva Edison and some as Emile Berliner.

In 1887 Emile Berliner invented a system of recording which could be used over ... Gramophone machine from the mid-1890s owned by Thomas Edison himself

Thomas Edison invented his tin-foil phonograph, Edison's phonograph was followed by Alexander Graham Bell's graphophone. In 1887 Emile Berliner invented the gramophone and records.

A gramophone record, commonly known as a phonograph record WHICH IS INVENTED BY THOMASH EDISON.
