As Bombay is english name it is changed to Mumbai. Madras to chennai, delhi to New DELHI, calcutta to KOLKATA these are changed because of that regional language easy to speak and also to remove british names. Thats why laccadive to lakshdwip.

The name was changed because lakshwadeep means one thousand of islands. Since, the three were very large, the parliament found this name extremely suitable and thus named it lakshwadeep.
