As Bombay is english name it is changed to Mumbai. Madras to chennai, delhi to New DELHI, calcutta to KOLKATA these are changed because of that regional language easy to speak and also to remove british names. Thats why laccadive to lakshdwip.

The name change to Lakshadweep was made to better reflect the local culture and geography. The term “Lakshadweep” means “one hundred thousand islands” in Sanskrit, which is more representative of the archipelago’s identity.
The change was part of a broader effort to standardize place names across India to align with local languages and cultural heritage.

The name was changed because lakshwadeep means one thousand of islands. Since, the three were very large, the parliament found this name extremely suitable and thus named it lakshwadeep.
