After 1857 revolt India was under crown directly, so person was sent by crown not of British investors. So governor general to viceroy.

After the revolt of 1857 or the 'Sepoy mutiny' or 'The battle of independence', India was directly bought under the control British Empire having Victoria as the queen. The east India company was thrown out and the post of governor-general was reconstructed as viceroy.
