Foam type extinguisher is used for oil type fire because it forms a layer on oil surface which prevents the oxygen to come in contact directly with oil called as smothering where as powder is used for metallic fire and the process is called free radical quenching. Here it is to be noticed that for preventing the fire the powder which is used is only for temporary purpose.

Even after receiving so many corrections why these people are not correcting the answer. It has to be FOAM, the powder is used in electric fire.
The reason is DENSITY of foam is lighter then petroleum element. So it forms a layer over the surface of the burning substance (petroleum) and cut offs the fire.

Actually, the question is incomplete, there are two types of petroleum fire, jet fire and pool fire.
On jet fire, it is recommended to use dcp, powder type as it do smothering effect.
In pool, fire foam is used as it cools, smothers the fire.

ALL fire extinguishers are designed to put out fires. A Dry extinguisher uses a powder or gas rather than a liquid, and cuts off the oxygen to the fire. They can be used in freezing conditions where a water type extinguisher would be useless.

We know that petrol fire is not extinguish by the water and electric fire is not by water and foam it is extinguish by powder type, to extinguish the patrol fire we use foam type it cuts the link between the fire (patrol) from air.

Powder as well as foam both cam be the answer because as a powder form it is used as chemical powder which has specific properties. And as foam it is also used as it decreases oxygen supply to great extent.

Petrolium products are oil & lubricants, we will use foam extiguiser, as it will make a foam cover over the oil and hence cut off the oxygen supply. Please correct the answer.

Powder and foam both answers are correct, ABC type powder fire extinguisher contains mono amonium phosphate which is also used for extinguishing liquid fires.

For foam extinguisher to petroleum fire the may intermix to form a heterogeneous equilibrium.
However, powder type extinguisher is used for petrol fire.

I think foam is a good answer here as compared to foam because suppose fire is not on a horizontal surface then how foam could work upon petroleum fire.
