Any of the set of metallic elements occupying a central block (Groups IVB"VIII, IB, and IIB, or 4"12) in the periodic table, eg: Iron, manganese, chromium, and copper.

Chemically, they show variable valency and a strong tendency to form coordination compounds, and many of their compounds are coloured.

They are not transition metals they are just d-block elements till CU AG AU only they are called as transition metals.

According to the modern periodic table given by Henry Moseley the elements Fe, Co and Ni are given position in the transitional zone.

The elements in the periodic table are often divided into four categories:

1. Main group elements.
2. Transition metals.
3. Lanthanides.
4. Actinides.

The main group elements include the active metals in the two columns on the extreme left of the periodic table and the metals, semi metals, and nonmetals in the six columns on the far right.

The transition metals are the metallic elements that serve as a bridge, or transition, between the two sides of the table.

As we go from left to right in a periodic table we can see a transition of metals to non metals and these group elements lie on the boundary of metals and non metals. Thus they are called transition elements.

These elements are iron, cobalt, and nickel, and they are the only elements known to produce a magnetic field.

Why Ni Fe Co are called transison metal?

These metals exhibit ferromagnetism, that is why they are called transition metals.
