The molecular structure is different. Carbon atoms in graphite are bonded in layers with only weak covalent bonds holding the layers together. When you write with a pencil some of the layers detach from the pencil lead and attach to the paper. Carbon atoms in diamond are bonded in a stronger tetrahedron pattern.

Dear vinesh,

Diamond has strong covalent bonds (c-bond) but graphite has very weak c-bond & double layer of graphite with weak c-bond make it weakest from others.

Eg: Pencil led, if you crush it it can easily crushed where as if you want to crush diamond you can't crush it easily.

Yes, You are right @ Deepak.

Lampblack does not have a well-defined crystalline structure; it consists of amorphous carbon particles.
Lampblack is not considered an allotrope of carbon, it is a form of carbon black produced by incomplete combustion.

So, option C is the right answer.

Pencil led, if you crush it it can easily crushed where as if you want to crush diamond you can't crush it easily. So we can say diamond is hardest in comparison to graphite.

Ya diamond is hardest because it has covalent bonds whereas graphite is just good conductor of electricity also diamond and graphite have different structures.

DIAMOND IS THE AS HARDEST as all valency of its C compound are attached to next four carbons where as graphite having 1 free electron making it softest.

Diamond is made of graphite, Lamp black is made up of the lamp.
It's obvious that lampblack is softer than graphite.
Hope it helps.

No, lampblack is the softest its formed by burning lamp it produces the deposit of carbon which is in amorphous form like powder.

Diamond has a rigid structure due to strong covalent bond.

Graphite has a weak structure due to weak Vander waal's force.

As per my knowledge, Lampblack should be the softest one. How is graphite is the softest here? Somebody explain, please.
