Diamond and graphite have different molecular structure.

How is graphite the softest?

Dear vinesh,

Diamond has strong covalent bonds (c-bond) but graphite has very weak c-bond & double layer of graphite with weak c-bond make it weakest from others.

Eg: Pencil led, if you crush it it can easily crushed where as if you want to crush diamond you can't crush it easily.

Ya dimond is called hard carbon cause carbon has strong bond all carbon molecules add to each other.

DIAMOND IS THE AS HARDEST as all valency of its C compound are attached to next four carbons where as graphite having 1 free electron making it softest.

Pencil led, if you crush it it can easily crushed where as if you want to crush diamond you can't crush it easily. So we can say diamond is hardest in comparison to graphite.

Diamond is the hardest element in the world.

Ya diamond is hardest because it has covalent bonds whereas graphite is just good conductor of electricity also diamond and graphite have different structures.

Diamond has covalent bond and very competitive structure and graphite has simple structure.

Between graphite&lamp black, which is softest and why?
