A coating of zinc is given to prevent iron from coming in direct contact with air and so as to prevent rusting.

In mechanical industries used most commonly this process some time they called platening or blackodizing and galvanizing main perpose of this process to protect the vessel/job from rusting/corrosion zing and other non farous materials are there but zink has a best property of corrosion resistance as compared to other has more advantages.

Because zinc prevents oxidation that's why or what?

As iron is more prone to rusting (when exposed to atmospheric air), Zinc, on the other hand, is resistant to corrosion. So, in order to protect the the galvanised iron sheets from rusting, a layer of Zinc is being applied on top of it.
