Distillation is the right answer because distillation is water purification process.

Permanent hardness of water cannot be removed by simple physical methods like boiling, filtering and distillation.

Boiling is the answer but caustic soda performs two functions: it removes the temporary hardness of water and also reduces permanent hardness only when the latter is slight.

The answers should be sodium carbonate. Boiling is used to remove temporary hardness.

Thanks for all.

Hard water contains dissolved magnesium and calcium ions. These make it more difficult for the water to form a lather with soap. Temporary hardness is caused by dissolved calcium hydrogencarbonate (which is removed by boiling). Permanent hardness is caused by dissolved calcium sulfate (which is not removed by boiling). Water can be softened using washing soda or an ion-exchange resin.

Boling removes the temporary hardness of water not permanent hardness of water.

It can be removed from calgon method and washing soda, not a boiling method is used.

Boiling is right answer, because all other method remove permanent hardness of water.

Only temporary hardness producing salts{bicarbonates of ca and mg salts} are removed by boiling method.
