You can also have a negative VGS if you apply a negative gate supply voltage VGG. By performing KVL in the Gate-Source Loop -VGG-Vgs=0, Vgs = -VGG.

The same goes for a source resistor by performing KVL in the Gate-Source Loop -Vgs-IdRs = 0 Vgs = -IdRs.

Since its self biased ! so we can't play with gate voltage,

Vgs= Vg-Vs, Vg is constant "self biased" so we only can change the source voltage by changing the source resistor.
