If we are considering only the single element semiconductor it means we are talking about the Intrinsic Semiconductor like Silicon(covalent bonding), Germanium(covalent bonding), gallium arsenide (ionic + covalent bonding),etc. These type of elements have 4 electrons in the outer most orbital.

1) silicon:
atomic number =14;.
electronic configuration = 2/8/4.

2)Germanium:
atomic number =32.
electronic configuration = 2/8/18/4.

If suppose we taken the intrinsic semiconductor.

Number of holes==number of electrons.

In p-type semiconductor holes are majority charge carriers, it lies nearer to the valency band, so carriers present in the valency band are called valency electrons. In p-type the hybridization is sp3, so number of atoms are 4.

In EDC, when we discuss about semiconduchetors, we consider Si, Ge only and both are elements of IVth group of periodic table i.e., having 4 valency electrons that is okey but still I am confuse about the amswer becouse here its given "Single-element semiconductors".

The electrons which are present in the outer most shell are called the valence electrons and in case of semiconductors like Si, Ge no of valence electrons are 4.

Boron and phosphorus are impurity substances which are used to made extrinsic semiconductors, so we are considering si, ge. Please tell is this correct.

Valance electrons means electrons in outer shell --- for a single element semi conductance there will 4 valence electrons as they are 4 group elements.

Semiconductors also includes elements like phosphorus (penta valent) , boron (tri valent) , but here why we are considering only Si and Ge.

@Kanika & Santosh

Could you please derive the required steps to find the solution, instead of guessing ?

Thanks in advance.

Single element semiconductors means pure semi conductors. Thats why we are considering Ge and Ssi instead of phosprus and boron.
