### Discussion :: Table Charts - Table Chart 4 (Q.No.4)

Study the following table and answer the questions.

Classification of 100 Students Based on the Marks Obtained by them in Physics and Chemistry in an Examination.

 Subject Marks out of 50 40 and above 30 and above 20 and above 10 and above 0 and above Physics 9 32 80 92 100 Chemistry 4 21 66 81 100 Average (Aggregate) 7 27 73 87 100

4.

The number of students scoring less than 40% marks in aggregate is?

 [A]. 13 [B]. 19 [C]. 20 [D]. 27

Explanation:

 We have 40% of 50 = 40 x 50 = 20. 100 Required number

= Number of students scoring less than 20 marks in aggreagate

= 100 - Number of students scoring 20 and above marks in aggregate

= 100 - 73

= 27.

Dhivya said: (Feb 28, 2014) The word less than symbolise less than 20 marks so we need to take 10 and above only

Tejasvee said: (Apr 28, 2014) How you are taking 40 percent of 50 why 50 how 50?

Emmanuel said: (Jun 13, 2014) But using less than in the sentence makes it start from 10 and above. Why is the aggregate for 20 and above being used instead?

Sohail said: (Sep 1, 2014) If there is no word lesser then answer will become 73. If there is lesser than = no.of students -73.

Riya said: (Jan 29, 2015) How 100-73 came? What that 73 denotes? How to calculate that 73?

Shikha said: (Jul 5, 2015) Aggregate: 7 27 73 87 100. Why we are not directly take 87 and 100 value? Because in table is already mansion "10 and above & 0 and above". So according to them we should add these two values (100+87). But they take 27 "Who is 30 and above"? Can any one explain this question?

Atharva said: (Jan 5, 2016) I think 0 to 100 indicates the total number of students. Then from that value deduct the 20 and above. i.e 100-73 = 27.

Sangamithra said: (Feb 23, 2016) Actually my doubt is: To get number of students with marks less than 20 we can subtract students with 20 to 50 marks from 10 to 50 i.e, 87 - 73 = 14. Why should we consider 100 - 73?

Kaviya said: (Sep 8, 2016) The word less than symbolise less than 20 marks so we need to take 10 and above only. Can you please explain this?

Amardeep Singh said: (Dec 14, 2016) A number of student scoring less than 40% in aggregate is 50 * 40/100 = 20 marks. A number of students who got less than 20 marks in aggregate are less than 20 means all the student who got 0 to 19 zero and above are 100 and 10 to above are 87. All the student who got less than 20 comes under the counting of 100 hence we have to find the number of the student from 0 to 19 marks which are 100 - 73 = 27.

Haripriya said: (Jul 22, 2017) Why we have to deduct with 100?

Shivaji said: (Nov 4, 2017) This is the best example of tubular DI.

Jithu said: (Jan 10, 2018) The que says that the given chart shows the classification of 100 students. That means in total 100 students are there; 100-73=27. Total-students having above 20=students having below 20 marks.

Veiru said: (Feb 14, 2018) According to me, the correct ans is 13. Because question says less than 20. So we will take a number of student scoring 10 and above. i.e 100 -87=13. But if we remove the word "less than" in the question the provided answer is correct. If it is wrong please correct me

Somesh said: (Apr 7, 2018) Answer given is wrong because it is clearly mentioned that less than 40%. So why would we consider 40% and above?

Kartik said: (Apr 26, 2018) It is simple, its the total number ie. 100 - (20 and above) = below 20.

Sunil said: (Jun 20, 2018) The word less than 20 is inappropriate.

Anil said: (Sep 10, 2018) It is simple, the total no of students 100. And who got 40% students is 73 remaining students are less than 40%. So, 100-73=27.

Dawa Gyeltshen said: (Aug 8, 2020) Why can't we directly take 27 from the table 30 and above. It is less than 40 % and we can easily get 27! Is there any logic here? Help me.

Tashi Tshering said: (Aug 9, 2021) 10 and above should be included but 20 30 40 above are not included since it is higher than 40% and above. Physic 92-80 = 12. Chemistry 81-66 = 15. =27.
