Directions to Solve

Study the following table and answer the questions based on it.

Expenditures of a Company (in Lakh Rupees) per Annum Over the given Years.

Year Item of Expenditure
Salary Fuel and Transport Bonus Interest on Loans Taxes
1998288983.0023.483
19993421122.5232.5108
20003241013.8441.674
20013361333.6836.488
20024201423.9649.498

5.
The ratio between the total expenditure on Taxes for all the years and the total expenditure on Fuel and Transport for all the years respectively is approximately?
4:7
10:13
15:18
5:8
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Required ratio
= [ (83 + 108 + 74 + 88 + 98) ]
(98 + 112 + 101 + 133 + 142)
= [ 451 ]
586
= 1
1.3
= 10 .

Here the question is about approximation, not about the exact ratio. the total expenditure on fuel and on taxes 586 and 451 respectively.

Now, as per the question, we are going to find the ratio of fuel with respect to taxes.

586/451.
We get. 1:1.3 or 1/1.3.
We are not going to take decimal in the ratio.
So, we'll multiply with 10 bcoz the decimal is just before one digit. If the decimal is before two digits we ll multiply with 100. So it is 10:13.

Hope it is clear.

When you divide x by y (x/y) you put 1 in the place of y and the quotient in the place of x.

Eg: 4 divided by 2 (or 4/2) is 2... actually it is 2 by 1 (or 2/1)..but here the denominator 1 has no real meaning.. so we take the answer as 2 alone.

However if you take the numerator as the divisor (in this case 451) and denominator as dividend (586) you need to put 1 in place of the divisor (i.e, numerator) and quotient in the place of dividend (i.e, denominator).

451/586.
Take 451 as 450 and 586 as 590.

Because as per approximation or numbers whatever rule it is ex: if the last digit number comes in b/w 1-5 i..e 451, 252, 555..it becomes 450 250 550
where as if the last digit no comes in b/w 6-10 like 456, 227, 228, 449...then take it As 460, 230, 230, 450.

Now 450/590
45/59
45)59(1.3
45
---
140
135
_____
1/1.3
1*10/1.3/10

10/13.

I think the simplest method to do this complicated division of 451/586 would be like this:-
Let's calculate 50%of 586 it would be 293.
Now, 10% of 586 is 58.6.
So add 10% to 293 thereby 60%of 586 is 293+58.6 = 351.6.
Now 70% of 586 would be 351.6 + 58.6 = 410.2.
So, it is confirmed that 451/586 is to be between 70% -80%.
Checking the options you would find only C to be 78%.
So, that is the right answer.

Simple method :

Taxes = 451.

Fuel & transportation = 451+135 =586.

Taxes( Total = 451) 100 % : Fuel & Trans 130% ( 100% = 451 + 30% =135, Total =586 ).

TAXES 100 Fuel & Trans 130.

Therefore = 10 x 10 = 100 = 10 x 13 = 130.

So 10 13.

Answer 10 : 13.

Guys,

I hope you understood how we got to 451/586.

Now just divide numerator and denominator with 451.

i.e. , (451/451)/(586/451) and that is equal to 1/1.29. So rounding off the denominator to one digit gives 1/1.3.

Now multiplying numerator and denominator by 10 gives (1*10)/(1.3*10).

And thus we arrive at the solution i.e. , 10/13.

451÷586 to round off.

Now subtract -1 from both numerator and denominator.
So 451-1=450 and 586-1 = 585.

Now, it becomes 450÷585 then it can be divisible by 5.
It becomes 90÷117 then divide it by 3 table
It becomes 30÷39 again divisible by 3 table
It becomes 10÷13.
While taking ratio it can be said as 10:13.

Simple dont be complicate, take calc in phone put 451/586= 0.769 keep this value and divide all the options given;

Take option a) 4:7 means 4/7=0.571.
Option b) 10:13 means 10/13=0.769 this is the value we got.
So option B is correct.

This is called reverse Engineering

@Pihu.

Very simple method: (approximation).

(451 - 1) = 450 and (586 - 1) = 585.

Now take these 2 values for calculation (we have subtracted the same amount from both numbers).

Ratio = 450/585 = 90/117 = 30/39 = 10/13.

Then, ratio = 10:13.

We can solve it in a very simple way as follows:

Expenses in FUEL & TRANS is how much increased to that of expenses in TAXES.

We can find the increase in percentage like this->

586-451/451 x 100% = 30%.

i.e 100/130 = 10/13 or 10:13.
