Switzerland rejected a referendum proposal that sought to cap the country's population at 10 million by the year 2050. In the referendum held on June 14, 2026, 54.79% of voters opposed the initiative, while 45.21% supported it, with a voter turnout of 58.86%. The proposal, backed by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), also called for stricter residency and asylum measures and the possible termination of the Freedom of Movement agreement with the European Union if population thresholds were exceeded. At the time, Switzerland's population stood at approximately 9.1 million, with foreign nationals accounting for nearly 28% of residents.
