The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared September 26 as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons through Resolution 68/32 in 2013. The date was chosen to mark the incident on September 26, 1983, when a malfunction in the Soviet early warning system almost led to nuclear war, highlighting the grave dangers of these weapons.
