National Handloom Day is observed annually on August 7 in India to honour the country’s rich handloom heritage and recognise the contribution of weavers and artisans. The day commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905, at Calcutta Town Hall and encouraged Indians to use indigenous products instead of foreign goods. The Government of India designated August 7 as National Handloom Day, with the first observance held in 2015. The occasion promotes traditional weaving skills, sustainable textiles, artisan empowerment, and the “Vocal for Local” campaign. Famous Indian handlooms include Banarasi Silk, Kanchipuram Silk, Sambalpuri Ikat, Pochampally Ikat, and Muga Silk.

Hiroshima Day is observed every year on August 6 to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, by the United States in 1945 during the Second World War. Hiroshima Day 2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the tragedy. The day honours those who lost their lives, remembers the survivors known as Hibakusha, and promotes global peace, nuclear disarmament, and non-proliferation. On August 6, 1945, the uranium-based atomic bomb “Little Boy” was dropped on Hiroshima from the B-29 bomber Enola Gay. The bombing caused massive destruction and long-term health, psychological, and social consequences for survivors.

World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was observed globally from August 1 to 7 to promote awareness about breastfeeding, child health, nutrition, and poverty reduction. The global theme for 2026 was “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works”. The observance was coordinated by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), World Health Organisation (WHO), and UNICEF. Key recommendations include initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusively breastfeeding infants for the first six months, and continuing breastfeeding for two years or beyond alongside appropriate complementary foods.

International Clouded Leopard Day is observed annually on August 4 to raise awareness about the conservation of clouded leopards, one of Asia's rarest wild cats. The observance began in 2018 through the efforts of The Aspinall Foundation. In 2026, India marked the occasion by launching the Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP), aimed at protecting habitats, strengthening anti-poaching measures, promoting scientific monitoring, restoring forest corridors, and encouraging community participation. Clouded leopards are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, and increasing human-wildlife conflicts across their natural range.

World Lung Cancer Day is observed annually on August 01 to raise awareness about lung cancer, promote early diagnosis, encourage timely treatment, and support patients, survivors, and caregivers. The 2026 theme, "Together through Lung Cancer," emphasises community support, scientific progress, and equal access to healthcare. First observed in 2012 through the efforts of international respiratory and cancer organisations, the day also focuses on reducing stigma, advancing research, and educating people about risk factors, symptoms, prevention, and the importance of regular screening for improving survival rates.
