Safran, a French aerospace company, signed a deal with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to jointly develop the Aravalli helicopter engine for India’s future multirole military helicopters. The engine will belong to the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower class and is intended to power the 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and the 12.5-tonne Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The project will be undertaken through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd, a 50:50 joint venture between HAL and Safran, with production planned at HAL’s facility in Tumakuru, Karnataka.
