Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar assumed charge as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) on 29 May 2026. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1988, he is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems and has served for more than 37 years. During his distinguished naval career, he commanded major warships including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya and the frigate INS Trikand. He also served as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, Commandant of the National Defence Academy, and Commander of the Western Fleet. His service has been recognised with prestigious honours such as the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Nau Sena Medal.
