Him Sarovar is the project under which Ladakh launched its first large-scale experiment to introduce Iranian saffron cultivation in October 2026. The initiative involves sowing 800 kg of premium Iranian saffron corms, amounting to approximately 90,000 units, across 4,000 square metres of land at Spituk Pharka in Leh. The site was previously barren land that was rejuvenated for cultivation. The project was inaugurated by Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. Its primary objectives include diversifying agriculture, strengthening the local economy and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for young people and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). The experiment follows the successful cultivation of high-altitude Lilium in the region.
