Dear All,
Functions of Groynes:
Training the river along the desired course by attracting, deflecting or repelling the flow in the river.
Creating a slack flow with the objective of silting up the area in the vicinity.
Protecting the river bank by keeping the flow away from It.
Contracting a wide river channel is usually for improvement of depth for navigation.
Types of Groynes based on the functions served:
Attracting Groyne's - Pointing D/S.
Deflecting Groyne's - Perpendicular to the bank.
Repelling Groyne's - Pointing U/S.
Sedimenting Groynes - For deposition of sediment.

Attracting groynes inclined downstream.
Repellant groynes inclined upstream.
Deflecting groynes, perpendicular to the bank.
Hockey groynes curved downstream in the shape of a hockey stick.
T shape groynes, special groynes with head in T shape.

Groynes are generally provided for prevention of banks of rivers and 3 category form in provide to that.
Perpendicular to river, inclined in towards upstream, inclined in towards downstream.
Perpendicular to river, inclined in towards upstream, inclined in towards downstream.

Water always flow from upstream to downstream because of gravitational force and that's why upstream is repeal and downstream is attractive so attractive groins are on the downward side and repealed is on upstream side.

Please, clarify groyne position weather upstream or downstream.

Attracting Groynes: A groyne pointing downstream is known as attracting groyne and these have property of attracting flow towards themselves, in this case also scours are created but are near the bank of the river.

My question is that where these are provided. Repelling groynes are provided on downstream? and attracting groynes on upstream?
