There are 2 curves in vertical alignment:

1) Valley curves.
2) Summit curves.
The shape of the valley curve is a cubic parabola.
The shape of the summit curve is square parabola and ideal shape is circular.

True spiral, cubic spiral, cubic parabola, and lemniscate are the types of transition curves, not vertical curves.

Therefore, option E is correct.

Ideal vertical curve will be circle because centrifugal acceleration will be constant and thus no jerk or discomfort will be felt by passenger.

@Anup.

Because cubic parabola is transition curve, not vertical curve. And it is recommended by IRC. Ideal transition curve is true spiral.

I think:

The ideal vertical curve is parabolic.
The Summit curve is a simple parabola.
The Valley curve is a cubic parabola.

Ideal vertical curve is CIRCULAR. But we take square parabola for summit and cubic parabola for valley.

Ideal shape of vertical curve is circular.

But in calculation preferred square parabola.
