Because head difference between free surface of water at point d and point c is 120-0 = 120.

When we assume the datum line is at point c.

Head difference between water level D and water level C is 120cm.

Water level at point D exceeds the water level at C by 40cm + 40cm + 40cm =120cm.

Point C is on the datum line.
