Kaolin is chemically classified as an argillaceous rock. This classification is based on its primary composition of kaolinite, a clay mineral. Argillaceous rocks are rich in clay minerals, which are formed from the weathering of silicate minerals and are characterized by their fine-grained texture.

Kaolin, also known as china clay, forms from the chemical weathering of feldspar-rich rocks and is commonly used in ceramics and as a filler in various products.

Kaolin, Illite, Montmorillonite, Halloysite are the examples of argillaceous mineral. These are of clay origin. These minerals have plastic properties. Montmorillonite has the highest plasticity of this type and high specefic surface area compared to illite and least is kaolinite. Kaolinite is used in making china dish and mud pot etc.
