DBT means ductile to brittle transition.

Phosphorus causes a DBT when the temp drops below some critical temp (which is known as cold brittleness or shortness because brittleness is caused due to lowering of temperature).

Sulphur causes a DBT when the temp rises above some critical temp (which is known as hot shortness because brittleness is caused at high temp).

Cold brittleness needs to be avoided because otherwise, steel will become brittle in winters.

Hot shortness doesn't affect much because steel will be brittle at a very high temperature and steel products will generally be at room temp.

Normally the steel has brittle by carbon content but,

To make steel brittle the steel is heated until that looks like red then sudden cool by water.

When the steel contains an excess of phosphorus content that brittle at low heat (is called COLD short steel).

When the steel contains an excess of sulphur content that brittle at high heat (is called HOT short steel).

Sulfur and phosphorus contents of coal Sulfur adversely affects the mechanical properties of steel and is the cause of red-shortness, that is, brittleness in the heated state, while phosphorus increases the tendency of a metal to become cold-short, that is, brittle at reduced temperatures.

What is 'cold'? Which material/substance is 'cold'. The question is either incorrect or incomplete.

If truly it's 'cold short steel' then the question should be corrected & written as 'Brittleness of cold short steel is due to an excess of'.

@Ashok.

No, it does not wants to make a steel brittle while during rolling process (temp 1200 degree) then due to presence of phosphorous cold shortness occurs and due to sulphur hot shortness took place.

As a percentage of sulfur increases then the strength of material increases (in rubber to make different materials having different elasticity eg. Tyre, rubber, plastic chairs, belts,) sulfur used.

It is property of material not a phenomenon. The material which do not show deformation but fail suddenly is called as brittle material and the property is called as brittleness.

Excces of phosphorus then steel brittle at low temp. Is called COLD BRITTLENESS.

And; Excces of sulphur then steel brittle at high temp. Is called HOT BRITTLENESS.
