When the steel contains an excess of phosphorus content that brittle at low heat (is called COLD short steel).
When the steel contains an excess of sulphur content that brittle at high heat (is called HOT short steel).
When the steel contains an excess of sulphur content that brittle at high heat (is called HOT short steel).

Normally the steel has brittle by carbon content but,
To make steel brittle the steel is heated until that looks like red then sudden cool by water.

Sulfur and phosphorus contents of coal Sulfur adversely affects the mechanical properties of steel and is the cause of red-shortness, that is, brittleness in the heated state, while phosphorus increases the tendency of a metal to become cold-short, that is, brittle at reduced temperatures.

Phosphorus additions can be used to strengthen sintered iron. But at contents above 0.6% P, the alloy becomes brittle.
