A lower BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge) number actually means greater thickness of the tube, not lower thickness.

Lower BWG for a fixed Outside diameter means more thickness, which means a less internal cross-sectional area as thickness is higher. Thus the answer is right lower CSA for lower BWG for fixed Outside diameter. BWG is defined after defining an outside diameter, in the case of ASME norms we use nominal diameter which gives us a fixed outside diameter and then a schedule no. Is used after which we get inside diameter.

Because BWG is directly proportional to cross sectional and inversely proportional to outer diameter of pipe.

Lesser the BWG higher the thickness.
For hight BWG less thickness.
For hight BWG less thickness.

Lower BWG mean higher thickness.
Hence area of cross section decreased.
Hence area of cross section decreased.

BWG is related to the thickness and not an area.
