Aptitude - Time and Work - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Work - Data Sufficiency 3 (Q.No. 1)
Directions to Solve

Each of these questions is followed by three statements. You have to study the question and all the three statements given to decide whether any information provided in the statement(s) is redundant and can be dispensed with while answering the given question.

1.

8 men and 14 women are working together in a field. After working for 3 days, 5 men and 8 women leave the work. How many more days will be required to complete the work?

I.

19 men and 12 women together can complete the work in 18 days.

II.

16 men can complete two-third of the work in 16 days.

 III.

In 1 day, the work done by three men in equal to the work done by four women.

I only
II only
III only
I or II or III
II or III only
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Clearly, I only gives the answer.

Similarly, II only gives the answer.

And, III only gives the answer.

Correct answer is (D).

Please explain the statement no.3. I am unable to understand it.

The question says which of the given option (I or II or III) can be left. In this question any two (I or II or III) can be used to answer the given question, hence, the answer is D.

How is it possible to find expected answer from only II condition? there is nothing mention about women in IInd condition please explain!

Suppose x be the work done by 1 man in 1 day.
Similarly let y be the work done by 1 woman in 1 day.
So according to the problem , the eq is :
3(8x+14y)+d(3x+6y)=1.

where d is the no of additional days required to finish the work.

Now we have 3 unknowns:x, y, d.

Statement 1 gives us the eq: 18(19x+12y)=1.
Statement 2 gives us the eq: 16*x*16=1.
Statement 3 gives us the eq: 3x=4y.

Thus to solve the problem statements 3 and 1 or 3 and 2 are required.
But no such option is there in the question.

Those who don't bother about paying attention to terms and conditions for usage of a product. Understanding this equation is nearly impossible for them.

The equations formed contain two unknown variables so any two options are required to find the no. of days..
The options are incorrect

The answer says "Clearly, I only gives the answer". How is this possible? from I you only get the equation 19m+12w=1/18 With this eq and with the data given in the problem statement, how can you get an answer for this question?

See the question is which option is redundant right... that means which one of I,II or III can be left

Since pairwise I,II II,III and III,I can give u answer so any of these statements I,II or III can be redundant..

That's y option d) is correct
