Aptitude - Time and Work - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Work - Data Sufficiency 3 (Q.No. 1)
Directions to Solve

Each of these questions is followed by three statements. You have to study the question and all the three statements given to decide whether any information provided in the statement(s) is redundant and can be dispensed with while answering the given question.

1.

8 men and 14 women are working together in a field. After working for 3 days, 5 men and 8 women leave the work. How many more days will be required to complete the work?

I.

19 men and 12 women together can complete the work in 18 days.

II.

16 men can complete two-third of the work in 16 days.

 III.

In 1 day, the work done by three men in equal to the work done by four women.

I only
II only
III only
I or II or III
II or III only
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Clearly, I only gives the answer.

Similarly, II only gives the answer.

And, III only gives the answer.

Correct answer is (D).

If you read the Direction it says You have to study the question and all the "three statements" given to decide whether any information provided in the statement (s) "is redundant and can be dispensed" with while answering the given question.

That means, the examiner wants us to check whether the statements given are redundant.

In the given question, we need to identify 3 variables and with the help of statements we can only solve 2 variables. So every statement is redundant. Hence Option D is correct. Trust the matter is understood.

Suppose x be the work done by 1 man in 1 day.
Similarly let y be the work done by 1 woman in 1 day.
So according to the problem , the eq is :
3(8x+14y)+d(3x+6y)=1.

where d is the no of additional days required to finish the work.

Now we have 3 unknowns:x, y, d.

Statement 1 gives us the eq: 18(19x+12y)=1.
Statement 2 gives us the eq: 16*x*16=1.
Statement 3 gives us the eq: 3x=4y.

Thus to solve the problem statements 3 and 1 or 3 and 2 are required.
But no such option is there in the question.

Guys, take a look at the main question, we just have to find what option is not required to solve the questions given below.

"Each of these questions is followed by three statements. You have to study the question and all the three statements given to decide whether any information provided in the statement (s) is redundant and can be dispensed with while answering the given question".

So here any 2 options are enough to answer the question hence option A or B or C is redundant.

According to me either (I) or (III) is redundant as both involve 2 variables. (II) involves just one variable and can be used to get the second variable in (I) or (III).

However there is no such option of (I) or (III) could you please correct this in the question?

Please feel free to reply here if any of this does not make sense or if you find me to be wrong. I'd like to learn.

Read question carefully. "Whether any information provided in the statement (s) is 'redundant' and can be 'dispensed' with while answering the given question".

i.e. When we find answer using I and II; III is of no use means III is redundant i.e. we can dispense it.

Similarly, there are two more cases in which we can dispense I and II also I. We can dispense I or II or III.

From II we can find the no of days required by a eight men to complete i.e if 16 is for 24 then 8 is for 12 days. from option III we can find the relation between the men and woman working days tat is 3:4 , 4/3*12=16 days for 8 women, then for 14 women it is 28 days .. it is clear that option II and III are mandatory to give the answer. then how is option D right??

options are wrong , you cannot find the answer without the help of all three statements.
If you analyse the question thoroughly , you will find that , all the three statements are reqd to solve this problem and the answer is , 43.4 days will took to complete the remaining work if 3 men and 6 womens work together .

I think, the question is not specific because only statement 1 gives us the work done by 19M and 12 W but not 8M and 12W and similarly statement 2 only gives us an idea about the efficiency of Man but together statements 2 and 3 gives us an idea about work to be done and efficiency of man and women.

I think C "III only" is correct since it gives the ratio of M/W which can be used to solve the original equation from the question. Alone II doesn't give any info on woman's work.

And alone the statement I just give another equation in two variables which doesn't help at all.

Read the main question carefully and you will get that we have to find the option which is not essential to solve the question.

So by any two options, we can give the answer, the third is not necessary.

That's why the answer is I, II, III. So we can remove any one of three.
