Discussion Forum : Time and Work - General Questions (Q.No. 3)
3.
A, B and C can do a piece of work in 20, 30 and 60 days respectively. In how many days can A do the work if he is assisted by B and C on every third day?
12 days
15 days
16 days
18 days
Answer: Option
Explanation:

A's 2 day's work = 1 x 2 = 1 .
20 10

(A + B + C)'s 1 day's work = 1 + 1 +1 = 6 = 1 .
20 30 60 60 10

Work done in 3 days = 1 + 1 = 1 .
10 10 5

Now, 1 work is done in 3 days.
5

Whole work will be done in (3 x 5) = 15 days.

That is 1/15 work is done in 1 Day.
Now 4/5 part of work that is (1-1/5) will be done in :15*4/5 =12 days.

In the last step the multiplication of 3 and 5 is for the no.of persons (3) and amount of work done (5).

1/5th work done in 3 days.
5/5th of work will be done in x days so,

1/5---3.
5/5---x.

x=3*5*5/5.
x=15.

3 days ---> work 1/5
x days ---> to get total work =1

Cross multiplication, then we get x = 15.

Actually in 3rd step work done by A on 3rd day was not added that's why the answer became 15 days.

According to me, the answer is [1/10 + 1/10 + 1/20] = 1/4 for 3 days the whole days is 4 * 3 = 12.

3days = 1/5.
6days = 2/5.
9days = 3/5.
12days = 4/5.
15days = 5/5 = 1 total work done is complete.

@chaaya:
1/5 work done in no. of days= 3
1 work done in no. of days= ?
so it is 3/(1/5)= 3*5=15
