Aptitude - Time and Work - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Time and Work - General Questions (Q.No. 30)
30.
A and B together can do a piece of work in 30 days. A having worked for 16 days, B finishes the remaining work alone in 44 days. In how many days shall B finish the whole work alone?
30 days
40 days
60 days
70 days
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let A's 1 day's work = x and B's 1 day's work = y.

Then, x + y = 1 and 16x + 44y = 1.
30

Solving these two equations, we get: x = 1 and y = 1
60 60

B's 1 day's work = 1 .
60

Hence, B alone shall finish the whole work in 60 days.

A worked 16 days.

If 16 days= x portion.
The remaining work is 1-x portion.
which portion B finished by 44 days.
Then,
1-x = 44,
1-16 = 44 (x=16),
1 = 44 + 16,
1 = 60 (1= total portion)
Am I right? Please tell me.

A having worked for 16 days
B finishes the remaining work alone in 44 days
so,
B finish the whole work alone is = A having worked+B finishes the remaining work alone
B alone = 16 days + 44 days
= 60 days

x+y=30.
so if A do a work in x days then B do it in 30- x days.
A's 1-day work is 1/x.
B's 1-day work is 1/y.
Both 1-day work is 1/30.

So according to question.
1/x + 1/30-x = 1/30.
Solve it and find x.

How you got 16x + 44y = 1, thy said 16 days alone a worked remainig work finished by b is 44 days then how can you frame the equation from this given data, I cant get please make me to understand.

A work is x. ie. x work completed in 16 days.
B work is 1-x. ie. Remaining 1-x work completed in 44 days.
We need whole work completed ie. 1.
So,
A work + B work=1.
Therefore;

16+44 = 60days.

My method:- Mixture

A -------------- B
16 -------------- 44
30 --------------
14 : 14
1 : 1

So, B completed the whole work( means A's work +B's work alone)=(16 x1 +44 x 1) = 60 days.

For eg:16x+44y=1:
A work is completed in 16days
For 16 days A's work is 16*x;
Remaining work=1-A's work...so
Remaining +A's work=1
Remaining work is done by 44 days=44*y
that's it.

Total work: 44+16 = 60 days.

Now a does 26.66% work.

Therefore B does 100-26.66 = 73.34% work in 44 days.

Time in which B can complete the whole work : 100/73.34*44.

= 60 days.

Hi all

Can any one explain clearly above 1, that hw the answer would be x=1/60 & y=1/60............

I think we cant get it from abve eqns that 16x +44y=1
x+y=1/30

A worked 16 days.
A+B worked 30 days.
A+B = 1/30.

16 days A work = 1/30x16 = 8/15 remaining work 7/15. done by B.
B alone work 44-16 = 28.

So Alone B work done =28 x 15/7 = 60.
